Comparison of Nike and Adidas - 4839 Words

Executive summary This report provides an analysis and evaluation of two of the biggest companies Nike and Adidas in athletic footwear industry. One of the most popular products is selected from each of the company to investigate. The report is conducted by analysing detail into the athletic footwear industry and both companies’ background, macro and micro environment forces, market segmentation, target markets, targeting strategies and position strategies. Many secondary researches which will be in the appendices to are done to finish the report. The results show that Adidas and Nike have similar market segmentations and targeting market. For leather footwear market, there are various kinds of shoes involved. Such as casual shoes, sports shoes and dress shoes. The leather footwear market also faces difficulties as fewer consumers spend money on leather footwear and more tends to spend on outdoor footwear. Both Nike Air Force one and Adidas Superstar are in between athletic footwear and leather footwear markets. The Company background Nike: Nike, Inc. is a major publicly traded sportswear and equipment supplier in the United States. It is the worlds leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel and a major manufacturer of sports equipment with revenue in excess of US$18.6 billion in its fiscal year 2008. (Iouboutin, n.d.) Nike has 31% of the total athletic footwear market share globally according to the Athletic Footwear – Global Market Shares figure (appendix 2). Nike has wide range of products and each product aims to different segmentation of the market. For example, the Jordan Series of Nike is mainly designed for men who have higher income level and interested in basketball. Nike Air Force 1 was released in 1982. It is a basketball shoe that featured a revolutionary technological innovation: a pocket of air in the heel for cushioning and support.
